The word makeup was coined by Max Factor in 1920, and it refers to substances or ingredients put on the face to alter or enhance a person’s overall appearance such as mascara, lipstick, foundation, lip-gloss, eyeliner or concealer Makeup is divided into three categories:
- 1. General makeup
General makeup is the everyday makeup applied on the face to enhance a person’s natural appearance. It includes cosmetics such as foundation, concealers, powder, mascara, lipstick and lip-gloss that are intended to enhance the appearance of the face.
- Medical makeup
Originally developed by dermatologist, medical makeup refers to a type of cosmetic products applied on the skin to cure various skin conditions such as scars from surgery, birthmarks, dermatitis, elevate the eye line, repair lip lines, and stretch marks. Medical makeup is intended to conceal blemishes, wounds and other imperfections on the skin that a general makeup can’t achieve.

Theatrical makeup is the makeup applied by characters on stage to help role interpretation and brighten the face during a theatre production.

- Blush
Blush also known as Rouge in French is a cosmetic product applied on the face and is used to color the cheeks in different shades. Blush was first employed as pictographs to depict women and men wearing lip and cheek rouge in Ancient Egypt, however, blushes in modern times is predominantly worn by women. FDA approved dyes or colorant containing pigment are used to make blush. These pigment comes are available in a variety of hues and quantity, including such as Yellow 5, Red 33, Red Lake 6. The purpose of blush on the face is to add flush of color to the cheekbones and it can be applied on the face as cream or pressed foundation with a soft brush.
- Mascara
Invented by Engene Rimmel in the 19th century, mascara is a cosmetic substance commonly used to color, lengthen, curl, thicken and darken the eyelashes. It is available in cream or liquid for, and it comes with a small applicator wand. Iron oxide pigment or carbon black are among the ingredients used in making mascara.

- Foundation
Foundation comes in powder, cream or liquid format and is applied on the face to smoothing one’s complexion, cover skin flaws, or change the natural skin tone. It is available in a number of kinds (which can be powder or cream), colors (to compliment various skin tones ) and formulations such as emollient or oil based.
- Eyeliner
Eyeliner is a cosmetic product that was first used in Ancient Egypt, India and Mesopotamia. It helps in enhancing the eyes. Eyeliner is a pencil like in shape that is used to draw line across the upper and lower eyelids. It comes in different pencil types such as:
(a) Powder based eyeliner
This sort of eyeliner in form of a wood pencil type and comes in dark matted tones.

(b) Wax- based eye pencil
It has wax in it and is a softer pencil making it simpler to use on the eyelids. They come in different shades of colors which can be pale or vivid with a brush applicator.
(c) Liquid eye liner
Contains opaque liquid and it applied to make precise or clean line across the eyelid.
(d) Kohl eye liner

- Nail Polish
Also known as nail enamel or varnish, nail polish is a colorful lacquer that originated in China and is commonly used on toenails and fingernails. It is applied with the aid of a small brush. It comes in various kind of colors and it’s primary function is to beautify, protect and give an organized appearance.

Complimentary makeup is used in conjunction with other cosmetic. Powder is an example of a finishing touch that is applied on top of a foundation. Concealer is also used to hide pores and blemishes, and it is typically applied before foundation.
