- Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the United States of pursuing a pro-Israel policy.
- Says that has contributed to the failure of peace efforts in the Middle East.
Putin made the remarks in a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani on Tuesday, his first public statement on the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Hamas militant group in Gaza.
Putin said that the US has tried to monopolize the settlement of the conflict, but has failed to find compromises acceptable to both sides. He added that the US has put forward its own ideas on how the conflict should be resolved and has pressured both sides to agree, without taking into account the fundamental interests of the Palestinian people.
Putin’s remarks echo previous statements by Russian officials and media figures, who have blamed the West for the failure to ensure peace and security in the region. A day earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the creation of a Palestinian state was the “most reliable” solution for peace in Israel.
