From Abia State formation to date, nine governors have led the state. Abia state was formed on the 27th of August, 1991, following her split from the Imo state.
The four heavily inhabited regions of the state—Aba, Bende, Isuikwuato, and Afikpo—were originally the source of the name “Abia.”
Abia state capital is Umuahia, and its largest city and commercial center are Aba. The state is known for its rich natural resources, including oil and natural gas, timber, and agricultural products such as palm oil and rubber.

Abia is also home to several national parks and conservation areas, including the Abia State National Park and the Obingwa Forest Reserve.
