The former editor of This Day and owner of the independent online daily The Cable in Nigeria is Simon Kolawole. Its Publisher, Cable Newspaper Ltd, began operations in November 2011.
In an interview, Simon Kolawole, the Chief Executive of The Cable, said that the decision to create an online platform for reading news was prompted by the majority of Nigeria’s regular use of the internet.
In order to offer news in a simple and timely manner, the online newspaper became the best option.
The mission of The Cable
- To contribute to Nigeria’s progress by providing knowledge-based journalism
- To create a brand that would stand out
- To have a brand that is built on truth.

- To stand out by being one of Nigeria’s and Africa’s most renowned online newspapers.
- Producing well-known journalists who will dominate the media and become industry leaders and award winners
- To be news leaders similar to British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and global leaders such as The Economist.

Achievement of The Cable
The Cable has launched a number of investigations, including into Custom activities, Unity Schools, and Ikoyi Prisons. The Cable Newspaper was the first online news outlet to report the divorce of Chris Oyakhilome, the lead pastor of Christ Embassy Church.
It was the first to predict that Akinwumi Ambode will become the governor of Lagos state. Nigerians through The Cable newspaper learned that Yemi Osinbajo is the vice presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and also President Muhammad Buhari’s ministerial lists, long before the Nigerian senate revealed the list.
Challenges of The Cable
- Getting experienced people to work with the online platform because the majority of good hands prefer to work on a print newspaper.
