The Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has mourned the death of its former President-General, Prof. Joe Irukwu. Irukwu died on Saturday at the age of 89.
In a statement, the National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Dr Chiedozie Alex Ogbonnia, described Irukwu’s demise as a shock. He said Irukwu was one of the brightest leaders of Ohanaeze Ndigbo and that his death was a great loss to the Igbo nation.
Ogbonnia said Irukwu was a distinguished legal luminary, an erudite scholar, and a moral edifice. He said Irukwu’s contributions to the development of Ohanaeze Ndigbo and the Igbo nation will never be forgotten.

The President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, also mourned the death of Irukwu. Iwuanyanwu said Ndigbo lost a man with a large heart.
He said Irukwu’s death was a great loss to Ohanaeze Ndigbo and the Igbo nation. He prayed that God would grant Irukwu’s soul eternal rest.
Irukwu was born in 1934 in Item, Abia State. He was a professor of law and served as the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo from 2003 to 2007. He was also a member of the Presidential Advisory Council (PAC).
Irukwu was a respected figure in the Igbo community and his death is a great loss. He will be remembered for his contributions to the development of Ohanaeze Ndigbo and the Igbo nation.
