Seun Anikulapo Kuti BACKGROUND

Seun Kuti is the youngest son of the late great musician Fela Kuti and is widely regarded as Fela’s chosen successor. He was born on the 11th of January, 1983 in Lagos, Nigeria. Seun is the grandson of Funmilayo Ransome Kuti, a political advocate, women’s rights activist, and traditional aristocrat. He rose to fame as a result of his incredible vocals and unparalleled saxophone skills like his father, he utilizes music to amuse as well as to engage in political engagement.

He went to the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts to study acting. At the age of 19, the singer put Egypt 80 on hold and, like his father, travelled to England to study popular music and sound technology.

At the age of five, Seun grew interested in music, and by the age of nine, he was performing with his father’s band, Egypt 80. After his father’s death on August 2nd, 1997, he assumed leadership of the band. Sean Kuti & Egypt 80 released their debut album in 2008 under the alias Sean Kuti & Egypt 80. The CD, named “Many Things,” received a lot of great feedback from Nigerians, especially followers of the late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. 

On Calle 13’s 2010 album “Entren los que quieran,” Seun Kuti is featured in the song “Todo se mueve” (Everything Moves). Seun was a featured guest on Jidenna’s second studio album, “85 to Africa,” released in 2019. The artist took part in the Occupy Nigeria rallies against President Goodluck Jonathan’s policy of removing gasoline subsidies in Nigeria. The Nigeria artist became an atheist in January 2012 and stated to his Facebook fans in 2013 that he followed the Traditional African Religion rather than the “imported religion.” In what may be interpreted as a method of conveying his views on religion. 

He led the resurrection of his father’s disbanded political party, Movement of the People, in November 2020, with the hope of registering it under Nigeria’s electoral agency, INEC.
